Lecture/Reading Assinment (Modern Art and -isms)

Modernism was the shock of new, rapid progressions of styles such as Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Futurism, Constructivism, Expressionism and De Stijl.  These new styles dramatically rejected the colonial view of European cultures and was highly stylized; thet were in such opposition of the old style of art that many found it all difficult to take in.  They often degraded it and called it childish or something to that tune.  In France the artists of Fauvism, Impressionism and Cubism explored the ideas of color and abstraction greatly; instead paying to proportion and the drama of a picture.  Futurism took place in Italy and emphasized the idea of poetry in motion as shown by Boccioni and capturing the industrial revolution.  In Russia constructivism was birthed and focused on overlapping shapes and abstraction.  In Germany was expressionism which centered around showing a relatable feeling through color and stroke.  De Stijl was developed in Holland by the Dutch and was highly influenced by Mondrian who spent years driving to the idea of "absolute abstraction."
The Birth of Photography was also mentioned in this reading to show how it influenced artists to think abstractly because photographers were putting them out of work :)
